Cure
Stuttering
Cure stuttering is a goal of many. Those who stutter and those who
have children or loved ones who stutter would love nothing more than to be able to speak and be spoken to
without the unfortunate stuttering that affects a great many people. Stuttering is not unique to one
group of people, there are individuals of all ages and from all regions of the world who find that stuttering
affects them to one degree or another.
Unfortunately the hope to cure stuttering is just a hope at this point. There is no cure for
stuttering, but there are a variety of treatments and methods that help the individual who stutters to develop a
more normal speech pattern. The nature of the treatment differs from individual to individual depending on their age,
goals, and the cause or contributing factors to their stuttering. Helping an individual to move
past their stuttering problem usually requires the help of a speech or language
pathologist.
In
children the earlier an intervention is planned the less likely it is for the stuttering to become a problem
that they deal with throughout life.
Children should be seen by a professional to help stop or cure stuttering
tendencies if they have been stuttering for more than three to six months, if there is a family history of
stuttering, or if there are communication issues that run in the family.
Many times the treatment involves strategies performed by a speech pathologist and then the
individual should experience a relaxed home environment where speaking opportunities exist without
judgment. The
people around the person who stutters will need to do away with negative statements associated with the
stuttering, instead they should be patient and offer constructive corrections of speech.
It’s important when trying to cure stuttering that the person doesn’t feel pressured to speak
in a certain way or perform speeches in front of groups of people that they are not comfortable
with. When
the individual does speak well, they should be praised for their proper speech.
To
help or even cure stuttering in individuals it is important that the people around the stutterer actually speak
more slowly and with purpose.
This can help to reduce the pressure on the individual to respond in kind,
which will only exacerbate the tendency to stutter. The less pressure that is
placed on the individual and the less hurried they are, the better their speech will tend to be, helping them
to form positive speech patterns and habits.
